Conversions

We also offer full guitar “conversion” work as well. Guitar “conversion” is when we take an old guitar (usually made of solid woods) from the 1940s, 50 and 60s and completely disassemble it, only to “rebuild” it into a seriously good guitar! (Many professional and studio musicians have used converted guitars in the recording studio).
A fully converted guitar undergoes a neck reset, refret (fingerboard plane if needed), and new tuners. We also make a custom bridge (rosewood or ebony), bone nut and compensated bone saddle and remove the back (and binding if present), which allows us full access to the inside of the top. All top and back braces are removed and well as the bridge plate.

Many of these guitars are made of quality, solid woods, but were constructed with cheap,
“production”, ladder bracing and “pin less” bridges.
We rebrace the entire top and back with quality, quarter sawn spruce and rosewood bridge plate. This new bracing will be done to match the “X-brace” style that Martin guitars used to use on their pre-war vintage guitars. A new bridge plate and bridge are constructed for steel string use with bridge pins.
Once the guitar is reconstructed, it will play, sound and feel entirely different. Even guitars in terrible playing condition originally, can be brought back to life by this “conversion”.
We try to keep one or two of these guitars in the shop for you to try, but they usually sell pretty quickly. Call to see if there are any completed guitars available for inspection.
