By sighting down the edge of the neck it can be determined if the neck needs to be reset. The plane of this fingerboard should be even with the top of the bridge. In this case the plane of the fingerboard is at the bottom of the bridge hence the need for a reset. |

John is injecting steam into the dovetail
neck joint in order to get the neck off of the body. This is done through
a small hole drilled into the neck joint through the fingerboard at the
15th fret. This is a very delicate operation and requires much skill to
perfect.

This shows the neck joint exposed. Now the neck is to be trimmed back along the edge of the heel, just the right amount to give a proper neck angle and improve the action and sound of the instrument. |
